If they know one of the people present, they step aside. That is an ethical obligation, not a courtesy.
They are bound by secrecy
Confidentiality covers the whole assignment, with no time limit, including long after the file is closed.
A bilingual relative is no substitute for a sworn interpreter: they are not sworn in, they are an interested party, and their presence can be challenged by the other side. This is especially true in family matters, where interpreting for one's own relative distorts the rendering without anyone noticing at the time.

Who pays the interpreter?
It depends on the setting. In criminal matters, the interpreter appointed by the court is paid by the State. In civil matters, at the notary's or for a municipal procedure, the cost normally falls on whoever needs the interpreter. We invoice the party who books the assignment, and the quote says so before the appointment.
How far in advance should I book?
Five working days give the widest choice of interpreters. Even so, we handle many next-day requests, and they are a significant share of our work. Call us: you will know straight away whether it is feasible.
The hearing is in Verviers, will the interpreter travel there?
Yes. The Huy and Verviers divisions are covered just like the Liège seat, with no travel charge. Simply state the division in your request: the address and the summons time shape how the interpreter's day is organised.
Can the same professional also translate the file documents?
Sworn translator and sworn interpreter are two separate qualifications, even though one person may hold both. When a case calls for both services, we arrange them together and you keep a single point of contact.
What happens if the hearing is postponed?
Tell us as soon as you know. If the postponement comes more than five working days before the date, nothing is charged. Inside that window a fee applies, because the interpreter blocked the slot and turned down other assignments: it appears on the quote, you do not discover it afterwards.
