Dutch and German
The country's two other official languages. German is also the language of the administrations of Eupen and Sankt Vith, and of the labour market around Aachen.

It is not difficulty, it is scarcity
Japanese does not cost more than Dutch because it would be harder. It costs more because fewer translators are available, and fewer still are sworn.
That logic has a very practical consequence: on a rare language with sworn status, the problem is the calendar, not the volume. Finding a sworn translator in Tigrinya or Pashto sometimes takes several days of searching.
Hence a simple piece of advice: on those pairs, tell us as soon as you know, even without the final document in hand.

Why one language costs more than another
It is not a matter of grammatical difficulty, but of how many professionals are available.
Common languages
Dutch, German, English, Spanish, Italian: plenty of translators available, so base rate and short turnarounds.
Intermediate languages
Polish, Romanian, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian: sworn professionals are thinner on the ground, which lifts the rate a little and calls for earlier booking.
Rare languages
Farsi, Pashto, Tigrinya, Lingala: a small pool, especially for sworn work. Here the schedule weighs more than the price.
Always into the mother tongue
Whatever the pair, the translator writes in their mother tongue. That is the rule that produces a text which does not read like a translation.
For a rare language requiring sworn status, tell us as early as you can. Finding a sworn translator in Pashto or Tigrinya sometimes takes several days: it is not the volume that blocks things, it is the number of sworn professionals in that precise pair.

Frequently asked questions
Belgian Dutch or Netherlands Dutch?
Both, and the distinction matters. Administrative, legal and commercial vocabulary differ noticeably. Tell us whether the document is aimed at Flanders or at the Netherlands, a question that comes up often here since Maastricht is thirty kilometres away. Without further indication on a Belgian document, we default to Belgian Dutch.
Why does German come up so often in your files?
Because German is an official language in the German-speaking Community: Eupen and Sankt Vith handle their files in it and expect it in the papers handed to them. Added to that are the cross-border workers employed on the Aachen side, whose contracts, payslips and certificates travel in both directions.
Do you translate between two foreign languages?
Yes, English into Dutch or Dutch into German without going through French. On more unusual pairs, such as Romanian into German, we sometimes route through a pivot language: we flag it, because it affects both the schedule and the price.
How do you check a language nobody speaks in your office?
